Users Suspect Instagram Is Sending Fake Notifications for Advertising

There is something wrong with the way Instagram is showing ads now.

It is not just that there are ads. Most people know that ads are a part of the platform. The big problem is how these ads are being shown. People are getting notifications that look like they are messages. So you click on them thinking something is going on.. When you open them there is nothing. No message, no explanation, something trying to sell you something, like the Threads app.

This is not right.??

Notifications are supposed to mean something. They make you think something is important. When Instagram uses the system to trick people into looking at ads it makes people not trust them. After a while people stop paying attention to notifications. That makes the whole experience bad.

What makes this worse is that it is not obvious at first. There is no sign that says "this is an ad". It seems like Instagram is trying to make it hard to tell what is real and what is an ad.

The ads themselves are not the problem. Businesses need them. Instagram needs them too.. There is a big difference between showing an ad in your feed and making it look like a personal message. One way is honest the other way feels like they are trying to trick you.

If Instagram wants to keep its users it needs to be honest with them. It should not try to make people click on things just to get views. It should not try to get peoples attention by making ads look like messages.

People deserve to know what is going on. They deserve to be, in control of what they see.. Most importantly they deserve to not be tricked by the apps they use every day.

This is a real experience from one of our users

Someone shared what happened to them on Instagram. They got a message that looked really important. It seemed like someone sent them a message. So they opened the app to see what it was.. When they got in their inbox was empty. Instead Instagram took them to a page that said they should try Threads. At first they thought something was wrong with the app. But it kept happening so they started to think it was on purpose.
This started to get really annoying. The person did not take Instagram notifications seriously anymore. They were not sure if the notifications were real or just ads, in disguise. Instagram used to be a way to stay in touch with people. Now it did not feel that way. It felt like they could not trust it. The person wondered if Instagram notifications were really meant to tell them something or if they just wanted them to click on things. They started to use Instagram because of this. Instagram and its notifications did not feel personal anymore. The person lost trust in Instagram and its notifications.
